Contact smart cards are the size of a traditional credit or debit card. They contain a single integrated circuit chip containing only memory or memory plus: a microprocessor.
Functionally similar to a small floppy disk, memory-only chips are less expensive than microprocessor chips, but also offer less security. They should not be used to store confidential or valuable information.
Contact smart cards must be inserted into a card acceptance machine. The pins attached to this reader “contact” pads on the card’s surface to read and store the information contained in the card’s chip.
